Our guide will help you make the most of your visit to this iconic park.
Urban playground
Riverfront Park is Spokane’s urban park in the bustling downtown area.
The park spans both sides of the Spokane River, providing visitors with grassy areas, scenic river views, and a bunch of recreational opportunities.
History of Riverfront Park
Riverfront Park’s history dates back to the late 19th century.
Originally, the area was used for industrial purposes, with mills and factories lining the riverbanks.
However, in the early 1900s, efforts began to turn the area into a public park.
The park gained national attention when it was chosen as the site for the 1974 World’s Fair, known as Expo ’74.
The event was a turning point for Spokane, leading to significant redevelopment and the creation of many of the park’s current features.
Top attractions
Looff Carrousel
One of Riverfront Park’s most beloved attractions is the Looff Carrousel.
Built-in 1909 by master carver Charles Looff, the carousel is a beautifully restored piece of history.
Visitors can ride one of the hand-carved wooden horses, tigers, or other animals while listening to classic carousel music.
The Looff Carrousel is a favorite for families.
Numerica SkyRide
For a unique perspective of Spokane, hop on the Numerica SkyRide.
This enclosed gondola ride takes you over the Spokane River, offering stunning views of Spokane Falls and the surrounding area.
The SkyRide operates year-round and provides a breathtaking experience, whether viewing the roaring spring runoff or the serene winter landscape.
I think the best time to take the Skyride is early – late spring. The river is raging at that time of year.
The Pavilion
The Pavilion is a central feature of Riverfront Park, originally constructed for Expo ’74.
Recently renovated, the Pavilion now serves as a multipurpose venue for concerts, events, and light shows.
Check the event schedule to see what’s happening during your visit.
Spokane Falls
No visit to Riverfront Park is complete without experiencing Spokane Falls.
The Upper and Lower Falls are beautiful, particularly in the spring when the river is at its fullest.
Several viewing platforms throughout the park offer great vantage points.
Rotary Fountain
The Rotary Fountain is a modern addition to Riverfront Park, offering a fun and interactive water feature.
Designed with jets that shoot water high into the air, the fountain is particularly popular with children during the warmer months when Spokane temps reach 90-100F.
It’s a great place to cool off and enjoy playful water fun.
Red Flyer Wagon
The giant Red Flyer Wagon has been a staple in the park since 1989.
It will hold up to 300 people, making it a viable option for the largest family photo!
Garbage Goat
Another park icon that has guarded the park since Expo ’74 is the steel sculpture locally called the ‘garbage goat.’
A vacuum system gobbles up trash, making this a fun and unique way to end your picnic.

Riverfront Park is crisscrossed with numerous trails perfect for walking, jogging, and biking.
The Centennial Trail runs through the park, offering a scenic route along the Spokane River.
The park has plenty of options for a leisurely stroll or a long bike ride.

If you’re staying in one of the hotels on the north side of the river, there’s a walking path that runs parallel to the river. You can cross the river at several points. I love to ride my bike over and enjoy downtown without the hassle of parking.

Bring a blanket and a picnic basket, and find a cozy spot to relax and enjoy the views.

Downtown Spokane restaurants
Downtown Spokane offers many excellent restaurants and cafes within walking distance of Riverfront Park.
Here are a few recommendations:
- Clinkerdagger:
Located in the historic Flour Mill, offering stunning river views and classic American cuisine. Clinkerdagger is a little on the fancy side. - Wild Sage Bistro:
Known for its farm-to-table dishes and cozy atmosphere. - Saranac Public House:
A casual eatery with a focus on locally sourced ingredients and craft beers. - Atticus Coffee & Gifts:
It is a charming cafe perfect for a quick coffee or light bite. We love to browse the small bookstore and gift shop while sipping our coffee. - Wonder Building:
Our family’s absolute favorite is the Wonder Building. It is a repurposed industrial plant (Wonder Bread Bakery). The perimeter of the building houses a few food counters and coffee shops. There’s a variety of seating and workspaces and, best of all, a game area with giant Jenga, foosball, ping-pong, etc.

Bring a water bottle, especially if you plan to spend much time walking or biking in the park.
Water fountains are available, but having your own supply is always good.
